Sciotovillebrigeconstruction2.jpg

The Chesapeake & Ohio Rwy. bridge linking Sciotoville, OH & Limeville, KY, was constructed between 1914 -1917by McClintick-Marshall Construction Company. The massive structure was necessitated to accommodate growing demand of coal and the increased volume of coal flowing out of the Appalachian range.

The bridge was constructed just down river from the C&O Rwy. marshalling yard and shops located in Ashland, KY. This rail yard served as destination point for coal mines in KY & WVA.  Coal was king, used for residential & commercial heating as well as serving heavy industry.
Much of this coal was destined for cities in the mid west and the coal piers in Northern Ohio for export to various points around the globe.
